Hindu Street, or Shankari Bazaar as local people call it, is the Hindu heart of old Dhaka -Puran Dhaka.
Shankari Bazaar is one of the most densely populated regions in the city and also home of the largest Hindu community in an otherwise Muslim city and country; they are vegetarians and believers in Vishnu and Krishna. It’s a real pleasure to lose ones-self while wandering among the small streets around Hindu Street. There are some amazing small workshops to be found, many still practicing ancient crafts, most popular are those that manufacture sculptures of the Gods, Vishnu, Krishna and others. There are also plenty of richly decorated buildings, constructed during the colonial period, to photograph. Despite their poor condition, they still show evidence of the rich and lavish life styles of the past.
